Weekend Destinations – Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka offers a number of picture perfect destinations that you can easily get to within a few hours’ time. Here’s a list of 3 weekend destinations and a few fun things you can do there.

Starting with Ella, the magical destination in the Uva province of Sri Lanka, that has become a major tourist attraction for obvious reasons. The breathtaking view of the hillside makes you feel like you’re in paradise! (Cue Coldplay Paradise xP)

We took a quick trip to Ella and these are the 3 places that we covered in our short stay.

Ella Rock

Ella Rock

Ella rock is the towering mountain that you find when you enter the city of Ella. At the foot of the hill, you find adorable fluffy dogs (or floofers as they say) that are waiting to be your guide. Just give them a biscuit and they will be with you throughout the hike!

One of the most picturesque places in the ella rock is the railroad that you find on the way to the top of the hill.

After you get off the railway, you get into the tea estates. You might find a person who’s plucking tea leaves who’d smile at you while you walk along.

After a while you’ll come across an old campsite, where you will find a nice place to rest and take the magnificent view in.

And the next stop will be the first peak of Ella. After walking a bit inwards you will find 2 more peaks, one of which will have a mini shrine built by the side of the rock.

Little Adam’s Peak

The little Adam’s peak gets its name from the number of steps you need to climb to get to the top. Although that sounds exhausting, its only a 40-60 minutes hike at most. But the view on top will leave you at a loss for words.

Nine Arches Bridge

This is one of the iconic destinations in the country. It is a bridge built in the colonial era by Sri Lankan engineers at a time where steel was scarce and had to use stone bricks and cement instead. The location is one of the favourite places of travel photographers.

The road trip to galle can be somewhere between adventurous and relaxing. The relaxing beaches can also be a good location to snorkel.

On our weekend trip to galle, our first stop was at Hikkaduwa.

Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is a pretty good location to snorkel, if you go there early morning before noon. There are schools of fish just casually swimming all around you!.

Even if you have no expert training or any training at all, the shallow beaches will let you easily get a glimpse into the world underwater. If you want something more adventurous, there are many ruins, even shipwrecks that will take your breath away.

Galle Fort

Ofcourse the galle fort is as everyone knows, an iconic location in the down south. The 170 year old lighthouse and the mesmerizing view is one reason for that. The inside of the fort is full of artifacts that either belong to or depicts the colonial era. The roads of the fort are paved with stones and you will find yourself immersed in an entirely different era when you walk inside the fort.

Unawatuna Beach

Another popular snorkeling location that has a magnificent stretch of beach. Its a perfect place to watch the sunset and relax at the end of the long journey.

Wijaya Beach

This is a hidden beach only 5 minutes away from Unawatuna beach, that is simply calm quiet and breathtaking. Here, you may find one of the rope swings that you see so often on Instagram.

This is a destination for the adventure seekers.

White Water Rafting

This is the main attraction of Kithulgala. There are many certified companies that will take you on an adventurous rafting trip, at the end of which, you can get down from the boat and swim freely while being perfectly safe due to your life jackets. However, please keep in mind that you should always consult a licensed professional and obey their instructions, in order to not get hurt.

Cliff Jumping

After rafting you will have plenty of time to go on another small adventure. There’s a small cliff closeby where you can slide down rocks and engage in trust-falls which many local companies are using for trust building activities now.

These two activities can be completed in 1 day, given you get there at least by mid day, and you’ll have plenty of time to get back to the city. However, if you decide to spend the night there, you can do 2 more activities, the following day.

Zip Lining

This is a short zip line ride. But it will be perfect for someone who has not done it before.

Abseiling

Always wanted to jump down from the edge of a waterfall? Well why don’t you climb down one?

Kithulgala offers the chance to climb down a waterfall, with a marvellous view behind you, while being safely tethered to the ground.

So that concludes our first list of weekend destinations around the country. Let us know what you think. Wish you all happy adventures!
